Quick, Get the Torches and Pitchforks!

angry-mobThomas Jefferson said, “The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive.”  I wasn’t sure if that spirit was still alive in a significant amount, but after seeing what is happening in town hall meetings on health care, I know it is still alive.  Across our great country, citizens are getting angry and down right rowdy towards their elected representatives (take a look at the videos listed below).  The current push for government-run health care seems to be the straw that has broken the camel’s back.  It’s making me think I should open up a torch and pitchfork store!

Congressmen and women are being shouted down in their own town hall meetings and are getting Constitutional law lessons from their constituents.  I think that many of our representatives might be getting a little scared over all of this.  That is a wonderful thing because, “when the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” (Jefferson again).  If your Congressman or Senator is holding a town hall meeting near you, grab a torch and pitchfork (metaphorically speaking of course) and go!  Let them know how you really feel.  We are in the majority on this issue.  Don’t be scared to get up to the microphone, and let them have it, “Be not intimidated…nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties…” (John Adams).  Arm yourselves with knowledge and facts, and be a little forceful about it because, “what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance?” (Thomas Jefferson-He has so many good quotes).  We need to continue to resist this assault on our Constitution and our liberty.  We need to let our lawmakers know that we are not going to take this quietly.  We will not let this go down without a fight.  We love our country and our liberty too much to sit back and let them re-make American into a European-socialist country…

Here are a few videos showing that the spirit of resistance is still alive:

“Soldier educates Congresswoman about the Constitution”

“Cold Day in Hell…”

“Just Say No!”

“Arlen Specter and Kathleen Sebelius”

“If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.” Samuel Adams

Well said. I’ve found these developments to be most encouraging. I’m going to be looking for town hall meetings in my area. Hopefully, I’ll get to attend one.

I agree with Matt – well said. There is too much ignorance in the world today; the only way to make our voices heard is to be knowledgeable and to have anyone who will listen, hear what you have to say. Another good Jefferson quote on the subject matter: “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”

I could not say anything better than the previous gentlemen. Me and my associates are making sure we will be at all meetings in our community.

It is heartwarming to me to see older men and women who have worked hard all their lives to make this country great and make livings for themselves get up and fight for the country that allowed them to succeed. It’s a fresh new face to the protest scene, unlike crazy Berkeley twenty-somethings with their bodies painted in the blood of Bush’s murders or some such nonsense.

These are true patriots, not just people doing it because “it’s the cool thing to do.”
