Jimmy Carter Thinks I’m a Racist
Jimmy Carter recently said an “overwhelming portion” of those who disagree with Obama are racists. So, if by “overwhelming portion” he means a majority, then there is a good statistical chance that he thinks I’m a racist. What is he basing this claim on? According to an interview with Brian Williams, he basis this claim on the fact that some people in this country are still racist, therefore an overwhelming portion of those who protest against Obama are racists. I know it doesn’t follow logically, but it seems many other liberals are saying similar things these days. I have always been a proponent of limited government and a strict adherence to the Constitution, but now those beliefs somehow make me a racist in the eyes of many liberals. Why?
I thought Obama was supposed to transcend race? Why are his supporters bringing it up at every turn when there is no evidence of racism?
In the beginning of this video, notice how Brian Williams says that many of the signs carried by protesters had racial themes. In your opinion, are any of the signs shown racist? The only one I think could possibly be taken as racist is the one that says, “Obama’s Change, Change We Don’t Need” and it has a swastika on it. In my opinion, the sign holder is comparing “Obama’s Change” to Nazism. I know most people think of racism when they think of Hitler or see a swastika, but the term Nazi was short for the National SOCIALIST German Workers’ Party. I think the sign is saying Obama is a socialist, like Hitler. Being a socialist is something opponents of Obama have accused him of since the campaign. Maybe it would have been better, in our ultra sensitive political correctness environment, to use a hammer and sickle instead of a swastika but this sign is not and obvious attack on Obama’s race.
The symbol of the swastika was used numerous times when people were protesting President Bush, so why should it be off limits to Obama?

If people were able to use certain methods of protesting against Bush, why are they not allowed to use those same methods against Obama? Does the color of his skin mean he is entitled to special treatment? Should it be an unspoken rule that we are not allowed to compare Obama to the Nazis because of the amount of melanin in his skin? I have the feeling Obama himself would not want special treatment, so why are so many of his supporters demanding it? Why can’t they accept the fact that someone can disagree with socialistic, big government policies and not be a racist?

I don’t know if you are a racist or not. You might know thatabout yourself—then again—you might not. You might not be consciously a racist, but you could be subconsciously a racist. The subconscious mind operates in ways that are hard for a person to tap.
I have a friend who says that ALL PEOPLE (everywhere) are racists in one way or another, and he may be right. No person that I know is more supportive of minority rights than me, but I can still laugh at a good, disparaging negro joke or yell out, “Oley Mackal Sapphire!!! Oley Mackal!!!” (See Amos ‘n Andy sitcom of the 1950s.) To that extent, I am probably somewhat racist. The thing I wonder about, though, is who is really qualified to define someone as racist? For example, I am a white guy and would guess that you are too. If I were to tag you as racist, would I really be qualified to do that? Maybe the only one qualified to do that is a member of a minority. For example, if someone does something that appears to be racist to Stevie Wonder and Stevie feels hurt because of it, perhaps he is the only one qualified to tag whatever the offending behavior was as racist.
With regard to recent conservative protests and the racist protest signs toted by some, I think people are tagging folks like you as racists because it appears that no one in your general ranks is ordering the people who tote those signs to take them down. In case you have never heard of it, it is a classical case of what is termed “tacit approval.” In criminal law, it is the same principle that allows you to be charged with Murder 1 because you were at the scene and were capable of stopping the perpetrator of the murder—but neither tried to do so nor called the police.
You can say that you would not have the power to take down someone’s sign because they have a right to free speech. Well, there is no such thing as free speech at my house. If someone gets verbally rowdy at my house, I have the power to send them home. The First Amendment ends at my front door. If it is your organized protest, I would think that you have the authority to ask someone, “Please take down that witchdoctor poster of Obama because that is hurting our cause more than helping it.” If no one does that, then it is clearly tacit approval of the sign and the racist message. Of course, the guy may say that he is on public property and you have no right to ask him to take his sign down. Technically, that is probably correct, but if his keeping it up poses a threat to your cause under circumstances where he is part of your organized demonstration—then it’s intimidation time because those signs are hurting your cause and defining it in a way that is not the truth.
What you have to understand is that we live in a culture where the visual has a much higher impact than mere words. If you have a demonstration of 100 people, and the biggest signs are held up by the only three racists in your group, those signs will have the visual impact of defining the whole group.
Anyway, you wanted an answer to your question. In my opinion, that is the correct answer. Just tell the racists to take down the signs because it is hurting your cause—and it really is. Even though I disagree with you on matters of substance in regards to Mr. Obama, I fully agree that you have a right to be unhappy with the Obama administration and support your right to demonstrate against it.

Charles,
Can you show me some of the signs that you believe are racist?

The left seem to think of race, race, race constantly. I wish they would forget President Obama’s skin color long enough to debate his socialistic policies with conservatives. But no, for some reason, they are stuck on Obama’s skin color. Are liberals racist??? It appears they may be.

By these standards, it must be OK to be Anti Semitic! Carter preaching others on racism is like Ted Nugent doing a PSA in favor of gun control!

I have been following the image on this sign for several weeks now. The image has been out for about 4-5 weeks. The first story that I saw about it (several weeks ago on AP or Reuters maybe—not a liberal website)said that it was first circulated by one of the leading figures in the Tea Party movement, but I cannot recall the guy’s name off the top of my head.
One of the interesting things about this image is that the body in this doctored photo is not that of a black man but actually a native of New Guinea. It was a good match though because the skin of the Oceania peoples is much closer in color to that of Obama. I do have to admit that it was a masterful piece of political art.
I’m a news hound, the kind of guy that could watch CNN, FOX, etc. all day and come close to it some days. Signs like this have been showing up in videos of conservative rallies for a while now. Would you like to argue why this is not a racist image?

Charles,
What exactly is racist about that picture? Portraying Obama as a South American or Pacific Islander medicine man when he is trying to fundamentally change our medical system seems fitting. It’s similar to portraying him as a snake oil salesman. Someone who promises something but can’t really deliver on it.
The sign did not have any disparaging remarks about Obama’s race. Racism means believing in the superiority of ones own race and/or the inferiority of another’s race. How did this sign do that? It did not imply that white people are superior or that black people are inferior.
Would it be racist is someone hung Obama in effigy? If yes then why? Americans have always hung politicians in effigy when they were angry. Bush was hung in effigy many times. Would it be racist to have a picture of Obama looking like a monkey because he has big ears? Bush was made to look like a monkey constantly. Why is it ok to do something to Bush but not ok to do the same thing to Obama? Should we treat Obama differently just because he is black? To me treating him differently because of his skin color IS racist.
Is that the only supposedly racist sign that can be found? I don’t doubt that their might be a few tea party protesters who are racist, just as there were a few racist who protested Bush (Kanye West!. However, the VAST majority of protesters are not racist. If they were do you think Michael Steele and Alan Keyes would be supporting them?
There are plenty of black people who do not like Obama and they have been very vocal about it. The National Black Republican Association showed up at the 9/12 tea party. Were they racists too? http://www.nbra.info/
Here is a good youtube video from the campaign showing some ‘racist’ Obama haters,

We need to stop treating people differently just because of the color of their skin.
