Obama Wants to Take on the Supreme Court
Thursday, the Supreme Court struck a victory for the 1st amendment by declaring large portions of the McCain-Feingold finance law unconstitutional. Justice Kennedy, writing for the majority said,
…when Government seeks to use its full power, including the criminal law, to command where a person may get his or her information or what distrusted source he or she may not hear, it uses censorship to control thought. This is unlawful. The First Amendment confirms the freedom to think for ourselves.
By striking this down this bad law, large donors (including corporations) will now be able to purchase air time for political ads leading up to an election. This did not go over well with liberals and I’ll tell you 2 reasons why.
Reason 1
Up until now, corporations had to give money directly to candidates because they could not spend it on advertising. In the 2008 election, corporations donated significantly more money to Democrat candidates than Republicans. Here are a few examples. The percentages may surprise you.
1 Act Blue $3,151,038 100% Dem 0% GOP Solidly Democratic
2 Goldman-Sachs $1,656,954 71% DEM 29% GOP Strongly Democratic
3 Citigroup Inc. $1,582,857 63% Dem 37% GOP Leans Democratic
4 JP Morgan Chase & Co. $1,171,720 68% Dem 32% GOP Strongly Democratic
5 AT&T Inc. $1,094,144 45% Dem 55% GOP On the fence
6 UBS AG $1,068,953 62% Dem 38% GOP Leans Democratic
7 Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers $947,815 98% Dem 2% GOP Solidly Democratic
8 Laborers Union $924,500 91% Dem 9%GOP Solidly Democratic
9 Morgan Stanley $923,850 62% Dem 38%GOP Leans Democratic
Now that these companies can actually purchase ads on TV, they will most likely use their money for flashy 30 second commercials instead of giving directly to politicians. This means Democrats (and plenty of Republicans) will loose money that they have grown accustomed to receiving. They don’t like this and now Obama and the rest of them are whining about it.
Reason 2
Now, you may be thinking, “If these corporations were already in the tank for the Democrats, won’t they still help the Dems out by running commercials supporting liberal candidates? Sure, Democrats won’t be getting donations directly anymore, but won’t they still reap the benefits of the corporate money?” This may have been true if Obama had taken a different route since being sworn in as President. Unfortunately for Democrats, Obama (and other liberal politicians) has declared war on big business. Even within the last week, Obama has proposed sweeping new regulation and taxes that could destroy negatively effect big businesses… the same businesses that are now allowed to actively advertise for or against political candidates. The Democrats have attacked big corporations and now these corporations will be able to fight back.
This has the President and fellow liberals scared. Obama is so upset that he actually wants to take on the Supreme Court. He said so himself in his weekly video address posted on the White House website. It’s very rare that a sitting President actively threatens the Supreme Court. I think Obama is trying to channel FDR, which makes sense because he is already following FDR’s failed policies of huge government spending with no effect on the economy.
As a side note, while watching the video, see if you can keep track of how many lies Obama tells. I can’t believe he is still claiming he has no lobbyist influence in his administration!
So, how many lies did you count?

Good analysis! Obama is powerless before the court. I doubt he’d been threatening the court had he been president when Roe v. Wade passed.
He’s going to waste some more political capital by making meaningless threats to the SCOTUS. I’ll make the popcorn!

The way to protect a free people from misleading or corrupt TV advertising is for individuals to educate themselves instead of believing whatever they hear.
I do not want the government “protecting” me from the influence of “big corporations.” I can hear what the big corporations have to say and decide for myself.
The Supreme Court made the right decision.
Let’s throw the Democrats out in 2010 and throw Obama out in 2012.

ActBlue is a Democratic political action committee, not a corporation.

Adrian,
Thank you for your comment, but you need to check your facts. ActBlue is a limited liability CORPORATION (LLC) and is considered a corporation by the IRS. They provide a lot of money to Democrats. However, now that they are legally allowed to run commercials, they will most likely do that instead of donating directly to candidates. That was my point. Democrats receive more money from corporations than Republicans and this ruling will reduce the amount they are accustomed to getting. Corporations will spend their money on commercials instead of lining the pockets of these politicians.

Wow – he’s really afraid we’ll listen to someone other than him. He’s afraid of us having freedom, isn’t he? He wants total control.

I agree. Liberals would love to have complete control of all information. They don’t want anyone else to get a contrary message to the American people because it could undermine their power.

Well ladies and gentlemen, judging from c peeler’s comments it appears the myth of the Democrats being the party for the middle class and the poor is still alive a well.
Mr Peeler, I too am working for a living. In fact I work 2 jobs and my wife works full time too. Over the years, Democrat policies have have raised taxes on the middle class, caused people to become enslaved to entitlement programs, caused the housing bubble, caused inflation, caused oil prices to continually rise, and forced many companies to send their jobs overseas because of our ultra high corporate income tax rate.
What has Obama done since he has been in office to help the middle class and our country in general? And before you say that the Republicans have stopped him from doing anything you need to realize that up until this month Obama had large enough majorities in both houses of Congress to pass any legislation he wanted without needing a single Republican vote.
