My Rant on Voting With Your Feet
For several years now, people who live in states with high taxes, like New York and Massachusetts, have been voting with their feet and moving to states with lower taxes, like Texas and Florida. The migration has been great enough that after the 2010 census, many liberal states will lose seats in Congress while many conservative states will gain seats. National Journal Online created a map that illustrates the expected change in house seats after the census.
As you can see from the map, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois will most likely lose seats in the House after the census. These states have all been implementing liberal tax and spend policies for years and are losing some of their population as a result. Of the states that will most likely gain seats, all are solidly red with the exception of Washington and Nevada. None of the solid blue states will see a gain of house seats after the census.
This means that people are voting with their feet in favor of conservative policies. This doesn’t surprise me, because liberal policies are not sustainable and eventually collapse. New York and California are near bankruptcy and Michigan isn’t looking too hot either. I don’t blame people for fleeing liberal mismanagement of state and local governments, but I’ve seen a problem in my own state of Virginia caused by people voting with their feet.
Virginia used to be a solid red state, but not anymore. While the vast majority of native Virginians are conservative, there has been a large influx of new residents from liberal states like Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts. I understand the appeal of a state like Virginia (or any other state in the south) to people from these states — taxes are lower, government is less intrusive in the lives of the people, the crime rate is generally lower, and houses are less expensive.
These immigrants are fleeing liberal policies in favor of conservative ones, and I applaud them for that. But the problem I have with many immigrants from liberal states is that they continue to vote for the same type of candidates and policies that they voted for in their home states. Don’t they realize the reason their home state has such high taxes and government intrusion is because of the people’s voting habits? Don’t they realize if they move to a new state in large numbers and continue to vote for the same liberal policies as they did in their old home state, their new home state will eventually resemble their old one?
Right now, both Senators from Virginia are Democrats and in 2008, Virginia voted for Barack Obama. In my opinion, this is because of the large influx of newcomers from the liberal northeast. Thankfully we just elected a conservative Governor, but I’m still nervous that former New Yorkers and New Englanders will continue to change the political policies and voting habits of my state. I’m glad these people want to move to a beautiful and historically rich state like Virginia, but they need to change their political views when they change their address. Voting with your feet only works if you change your voting habits as well. If you don’t change the way you vote, you will eventually turn your new home state into the same type of liberal, bankrupt, high tax state you moved away from.

That map does seem encouraging. But like you, I’m mystified as to why folks would vote for what made them leave their home states in the first place.

I’m with Matt,
Why do these people move to conservative states and vote again for liberal policies? Does the progressive brainwashing have that much of a hold on them? It seems to me that they would be better served fighting to rid their own states of this progressive cancer that is eating away their states.

Great post FL, my brother and I are considering moving from Nevada. If Reid gets re-elected, it’s a done deal.

If you ever want to move to Virginia, I know a good realtor. We could use some more conservative, freedom minded voters.

I live in Michigan I love the idea of at least one of these liberals being run out of the state. That being said, we are due for a new governor this fall as the granola bar in charge right now can’t run again. Most voters I have spoken with expect the end of the liberal rein in Michigan for a while. A good deal of Union workers have lost their jobs here and gone else where I fear they have gone to your states to poison your values and spread their disease there.
Sorry for that. But better you guys then us.
Good post keep it up.

“This means that people are voting with their feet in favor of conservative policies.”
Yea, uh huh, right. Couldn’t be because there are no jobs because dumb ass “conservatives” like yourself have driven the middle class to the ground since the advent (want to make it sound holy for you) of Ronald Reagan. Remember that cool surplus we had with Clinton? Remember the off-budget bullshit that W. laid on this country? Yea, it sent the economy down the toilet. Yea it was BUSH that started the Wall Street Bailout. Tough to chew on facts isn’t it?
Get your head out of your ass douche bag.

P.S.
Hope you lose your health care. Oh, and when you get to retirement age remember to opt out of SS & Medicare. You wouldn’t want the socialisty, government run health care to get between you and your doctor.

Paul, thank you for your comment. However, as is common for a liberal, you insulted me, wished me ill will, had no tolerance or respect for my opinion, and still did not debate my point. Why do you think people are leaving states like Mass, New York, and California? Why do you think conservative states like Texas and Florida are growing in population? If Bush was so bad, why are people moving to his home state in droves? Would you rather live in New York city where the local and federal government takes over 50% of your income, or would you rather live in Texas where there is no state income tax?
Paul, it would serve you well to learn how to debate with someone who has a differing opinion, instead of being intolerant and insulting.
Why do you think liberals are so intolerant of others? The more contact I have with intolerant liberals, the more I realize that the Democrat party is becoming the party of Fascism.

[...] My Rant on Voting With Your Feet The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy. – Carrol Quigley, Tragedy and Hope [...]
