On this day and every day may we honor and never forget the sacrifices made by so many Americans in the preservation of our liberty.  Our rights and liberty are given to us by God, but the free exercise of them is preserved by the men and women of our military.  Thank you soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. Those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us are not forgotten.

Please remember to pray for the names on the Forgotten Liberty Military Prayer List and for all the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

PS  Those of you who are regular readers have probably noticed that I have not been posting much for the last 2 months.  We are currently in the process of buying and moving in to a new house and we recently took a vacation to Rome so I have not had much time to post anything.  I hope to be back on a regular posting schedule soon.

I agree with Liberty’s post. We should honor those men, and I went out of my way to do so yesterday with a man who has served this country in our military for 33 years.

I have yet another concern today Liberty. My wife and I have vacationed on the gulf coast for many years, so much so that certain places like Sanibel and Captiva Islands are like second homes to us. We are concerned that many of our happiest haunts all along the Gulf of Mexico are about to be destroyed by the oil spill in the coming months. That seems fairly inevitable right now and unavoidable. I have no power to stop that and neither does anyone else. My major concern right now is that British Petroleum has an army of lawyers working on internal plans to save its corporate hide and weasel out of the enormous financial obligations they have to this country as a result of the spill. Legally, they have an obligation of only $60,000,000. Beyond this, the weaseling starts. That weaseling will be made easier by the fact that British Petroleum is a foreign country with no real obligations to our country. I have written the following letter to Senator Bob Corker (Republican-Tennessee). I intend to send another like it to my other federal government representatives and President Obama. Here it is:

    Dear Senator Corker:

The oil well leak in the Gulf of Mexico is out of control and no one has been able to plug it. The millions of gallons of oil being spilled pose a grave long-term threat to the economy of the United States. It could not have come at a worse time because our economists tell us that we are in a weak and jobless economic recovery that is likely to last for many years.

We know now that this leak was caused by the same sort of factors that caused the 2008 Wall Street investment bank meltdown:

    1) unjustified technical risk-taking, 2) corporate incompetence in not preparing for a spill like this, 3) and federal regulators who refused to do their assigned jobs to protect the American people.

This catastrophe is not a Republican problem, a Democratic problem, an Independent problem, or a Libertarian problem. It is an American problem that affects us all and our collective economic future. This is no time to play politics. It is time to unite.

Right now, my principal concern is that British Petroleum has been behaving oddly in the past few weeks and that their legal counsel has been developing a strategy that will allow BP to escape from the fantastic financial and legal responsibility they now owe to our country.

The American people were outraged when the Wall Street bankers were paid bonuses from our tax dollars. However, that was nothing compared to the outrage that will develop as BP begins weaseling its way out of their predicament and leaving us American taxpayers with the bill. Every politician in Washington, D.C. will have his or her head on the chopping block when that happens again, and you know that the national mood is already very sour towards Congress. Therefore, although it might violate some of your instincts and principles, I would like to kindly request that you consult with your colleagues and President Obama and do the following:

    1) Have President Obama declare a limited state of national emergency with regard to the oil spill and its cleanup.

    2) Direct the President to use the special powers afforded to him in such emergencies to nationalize and confiscate ALL British Petroleum assets and real property in the United States—every last penny of funds and property.

    3) Inform the British government that we shall expect them to do the same and deliver those confiscated assets to the United States on penalty of Great Britain losing the favored nation status it currently enjoys with the United States, including all trade and information sharing for defense and other purposes. If necessary, withdraw the U.S. Embassy mission in London. Make it clear to the British government that British Petroleum is not going to weasel out of its responsibilities and that any entity (governmental or otherwise) that aids or abets such activity is going to pay an awful price for doing it.

This is really our only viable option right now, and we need to simply do it. This nation has a right to take all means necessary to protect itself and its people.
