Representative Government or Reprehensible Government?
While watching the C-span coverage of the House of Representatives and their vote on the Senate health care bill, I became more and more depressed as the debate went on. It is clear to all who have eyes to see and ears to hear that the majority of Americans do not want this bill. All the polls have shown this. T he bill just passed by the House (219 to 212) still includes the Corn-Husker Kickback, the Louisiana Purchase, and federal funding of abortion. Americans do not want these things to become law, but the Democrats have rejected the will of the American people.
With our government firmly rejecting the will of the people and seizing power that we the people have not given them via the Constitution, we are left with the question, “What can we do?” What can we the people do when our representative government no longer represents us? What can we the people do when our politicians have rejected the American ideal of self governance? What can we the people do when our own hard earned tax money is used to buy votes? What can we the people do when our government mandates what we must buy and which doctors we must see? What can we the people do when our government rejects us?
This is a sad day for our country. Our forefathers, who were mostly farmers and shopkeepers, fought a war against one of the largest and most powerful empires in history to create a representative republic focused on limited government and liberty. My fellow Americans, we are no longer a representative republic. We now have an oligarchy of Democrats ruling over us who reject our American idea of self governance. This oligarchy does not care what we the people want because they have rejected the will of the people. They have forgotten that all power rests in the people. They have forgotten that they work for us. I think it’s time we jog their memory.
Our republic has been dealt a painful blow, but we cannot give up the fight. We cannot give up the fight to reclaim our founding principles of self government and liberty. We cannot and we will not give up. I truly believe we can win and “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

I agree with you, that this is a sad day for the Republic. I contacted my local state senator tonight and asked him what actions we can take on a state level to fight this. He told me that they have introduced legislation to not accept this bill. The states are the key my friend. Get to know your district senator and rep and call them. The states need to be reminded just how much power they have. Spread the word.

It seems like the ultra-liberals have been able to bribe and coerce enough congress-scumbags to pass the Obamacare. And as I said before, there would be hell to pay for this monstrosity. Obamacare is the very definition of unlimited government – the threat of which was forwarned by the Founding Fathers more than two centuries ago. The federal government, which is up to its neck in debt and unfunded liabilities, decided to launch the biggest entitlement of all times – the medical care for all. The spending on this new entitlement will surely dwarf many if not most of Federal programs and will make the bankruptcy of federal and state governments inevitable. The time of reckoning is at hand, brothers and sisters. Obamacare is the last breath of the liberal order – and it’s time to take America back from the party of thieves and looters.
All patriots of this nation must stand together and fight back. United we will win! There is no blue or red America anymore – there are only those that believe in America the beautiful, America the free, America the shining city on the hill – and those that believe in welfare socialism and government tyranny. Today, we fight not only for our personal well-being – but for the dignity and honor of this country, for the right to look into the eyes of our children and say – we defended this nation from the perils of socialism. In November 2010, we will answer the crucial questions of our times – are American people worthy of the efforts of the Founding Fathers? Will American people have to right to proudly say “We are Americans” – or they will forever live in infamy and indignity of welfare socialism?
I am glad that the Democratic Party passed the Rubicon. From now on, there is no coming back for the liberal elites, no talk of compromise and middle-ground. Today, it is abundantly clear that we either will live in Obama-America or America that our Founding Father envisioned. You cannot have both.
The November elections will be the most important elections in our lifetime. If you don’t vote for America in November – you don’t deserve to be called an American.

While I may agree with you mostly the response is that many were against de-segregation or the Civil War but politicians passed laws anyway. Also, before phones and planes representatives knew little of what went on back home and probably made more decisions that went against the will of the people than happens now.
So, you watched a lot of that debate? I did too and the more I watched it, the worse I felt. I finally gave up and went to bed, as I knew they were going to pass it. It is indeed, a sad day for our country. A lot of talk has been going back and forth between supporters and opponents of this legislation and a lot of claims have been made on both sides. Of one thing I am certain. This legislation is going to have consequences for our country that can not be perceived right now and I am not convinced they will be good.
I agree FL, it is a sad day, but we still have options, and we have to be as relentless as the left has been. they have literally been working on their plans for a century. It took that long to get to this point. Hopefully, it won’t take us as long to get it back. If it does, there will be nothing left to save.

Well, I have some advice for you Liberty. “We the People…” can remember that they are only approximately half of the people and that the other approximately half of the American people are also “We the People…” who do not agree with you or your vision for the United States.

Republican talk of repealing the health care reform bill is just BS to make their followers think they are trying hard to do something. It’s like when they propose constitutional amendments against flag burning. The proposing right wing Congressman knows full well that amending the constitution or getting a 2/3 vote on any such thing has about the same chance of passing as Captain Kangaroo walking on water. He just knows it will sound good to the people who follow him. What is standing in the way of the Republicans repealing health care reform this fall. Try these:
1) A CERTAIN VETO of any such bill by President Obama and a zero chance of overriding a veto with a 2/3 Republican majority in Congress. They may win some more seats this fall–but not enough to do that. It takes close to supernatural intervention to override a presidential veto, and I suspect God would not cooperate because of his love for the down and out. The VETO POWER exists for at least three more years. If Obama gets re-elected, seven more years.
2) The health care reform bill is no longer a generalized abstraction that can be exploited with scare stories and ignorance. It is reality now like Social Security. Each individual American (whether for it or against it) is at the same place now. “How does it affect me?” Pretty soon, each household in the United States will get official government mailings—just like those from the IRS and Social Security Administration—specifying how it benefits that particular family. Most people are going to like what they see and wonder what the fuss was all about.
3) The Republicans will not win enough House or Senate seats to get the 60 votes necessary in the U.S. Senate to avoid a Democrat filibuster on a health care repeal bill. From a legislative viewpoint it is a dead issue, and the Republicans would not dare try revision of Senate rules to apply the so-called “nuclear option.” Why? They know that the next time the Democrats have a majority their worst Republican dreams would come true and they would have no way of stopping the Democrats from passing everything they want on a simple majority vote. The risk is simply too high to take.
4) Have the U.S. Supreme Court declare the health care bill unconstitutional? Dream on. This bill was written by several 100 of the best millionaire lawyers in the United States. Every word was chosen carefully to prevent any chance of it. However, even in a wild dream, the high court might reject only a few parts like special deals for states—leaving most of the actual health care measures (the so-called socialism part of it) fully intact.
5) Elements of the Republican Party have tried every scheme imaginable since the 1930s to destroy, gut, hollow-out, rescind (use whatever word you like) Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, and even Welfare. In the past couple of decades a few needed changes were made to Welfare with even the Democrats on board. I would call that nothing but a slight adjustment. Aid to Families with Dependent Children is still alive, well, and doling our free dollars to the families that qualify—with a few term limits. My Point: ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS ARE FOREVER. Once in, they NEVER go away.
6) What do Republicans, Libertarians, far right whack jobs, and Tea Partiers need to know about repealing the health care reform bill. Dante said it best in “The Divine Comedy,” as translated into English by one person in the 19th century: “ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE.” Yes, you have entered Hell. That is all you need to know, and no matter how you might feel about that—deep in your conservative hearts—you know I am correct. There is no way out. You know it. You know it. You know it.

Why do you think half of all Americans disagree with me? Have you not seen a single health care poll result in the last year? Here are some facts for you, according to Gallup polling, only 20% of Americans consider themselves liberal while 40% consider themselves conservative. This means for every 1 person like you there is 2 like me. Your half and half idea of America only exists in the minds of liberals. America is a center right country and it is growing more conservative every day. This is a fact. Yes, I was upset when the bill passed. I was really upset about the corruption and the backroom deals. I just saw today that Bart Stupak’s district is receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants for 3 very small airports. If this health care bill was so great, why were so many bribes needed to pass it? But I am no longer upset or depressed. Every day I see more and more Americans waking up to the path our country is on. Every day I see more and more Americans realize that government can’t solve all of our problems. Come November, the amount of Americans who have woken up to the destruction of our core principles will be clearly evident. I can guarantee that the November elections won’t be a 50/50 split.

As much as I am heartened by the outpouring of support for liberty, we must continue to remember that “what the American people want” is not as important as maintaining our form of constitutional government. This health care bill (law) is a reproach against self-government. So even if 100% of the Americans people supported it, this bill/law would remain illegal because it transgresses our very form of government. This makes the bill/law a tool of treason, and those who passed it traitors to our country.

The CNN poll I saw on the television over the weekend showed about a 50-50 split between those who favored the health care reform bill and those who do not. I visit a blog where numerous friendly conservatives visit. They make it clear that their conservatism does not mean that they agree with Tea Party crazies, as they view them. Just because you are conservative on a number of issues does not mean that you are against health care reform. There is no such thing as totally united in lock-step.
Charles, can you provide a source for the poll that shows a 50/50 split on health care? Every poll I have seen has about a 20% spread, around 60% opposed and 40% or less in favor
All I know is that it was the poll numbers Wolf Blitzer put up on the screen during the coverage of the debate late Sunday afternoon. Right after it was put up there, David Gergen made some comments about how split the American people were on the issue at that time.
I hear you extremist right wing guys are calling up Democratic Congressmen with death threats and threatening their children too. It was a long story that was up on Yahoo! a few minutes ago. The FBI is mighty interested in it—especially the part about the snipers. Can you say 20 to life?

I also remember the left wing protests in Pittsburg last year. They were protesting capitalism and free trade. They smashed up cars, started fires, and threatened the police and politicians. Simply put, for every 1 death threat that comes from a conservative, there are probably 5 that come from liberals. Have you ever seen a tea party protest that turned violent? I haven’t. Have you ever seen a left wing protest that turned violent? I sure have.
The crazy left wingers who protested Bush were some of the most nasty and obscene protesters in American history. Of course the liberal media did very little to cover it. However, they cover the handful of violent threats from Tea Partiers. It’s a statistical fact that if you have a very large group (like the Tea Parties) you are going to have a few nut jobs. That’s just a fact of life. The Tea Parties are for limited government, not violence. There are lots of left wing crazies too, like Obama’s friend Bill Ayers (his left wing group bombed the Pentagon, a judge’s house, and a police station… that’s your typical Tea Party stuff right?), or the protesters who wanted to kill Bush and have threatened Conservatives.

I was never part of a Bush protest. In fact, I was all in favor of the Iraq War and getting rid of Sadaam Hussein. You must be talking about those Greenpeace nuts and those other nuts who are always out protesting against the World Bank and all of that global economic stuff. I’m not one of those people. I don’t even know any of those people. As several people of a conservative mind have noted over on the blog I visit, most people have a mix of conservative, moderate, and liberal ideas on various subjects. That is true with me. The feeling is that people like the Tea Partiers, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck follow a version of the the old Southern “One Drop Rule.” You remember that from the Jim Crow days. If you have just one tiny drop of negro blood in you, that automatically makes you ALL NEGRO. I think you guys operate like that. A person might be conservative on six issues, moderate on five issues, and liberal on one issue. Trouble is, that one issue makes you ALL LIBERAL. This is why people (liberal, moderate, and conservative) think you Tea Party types are just plain nuts.
I grew up in a small southern town in the 1960s. It was a very conservative place. Even the liberals in that time and place would be conservatives now. We had a chapter of the John Birch Society that sometimes met at my best friend’s house. I was close friends with his aunt and uncle who were members. They were nice people. Trouble is, most of the conservative people in my small town thought they were nuts—and they were nuts. This is the same problem the Tea Party Movement has. Sure, they appear to have quite a bit of support here and there—but most intelligent Joes know that they are just plain nuts like their John Birch Society forebears. That’s all you need to know. When you are 60, you’ll look back and say, “You know. That Charles guy was right.” I guarantee it. You just haven’t lived long enough to be aware of the things that I am and how time changes people.

The reason I lumped you in with all the crazy Bush protesters is because you lumped me in with people who have made death threats to their congressmen when you said, “I hear you extremist right wing guys are calling up Democratic Congressmen with death threats”. I have never called a Congressman and gave a death threat. Do you have an evidence that I have issued a death threat? Why would you do this without any evidence? Are you an angry intolerant liberal that has to insult anyone who has a different opinion?
I would also like to know why you think I am an extremist. Can you point to anything in my posts that is extreme? Are my beliefs in individual liberty, limited government, personal responsibility and a free market extreme? Please, tell me which beliefs are extreme.
Calling someone names and hurling personal insults is a liberal tactic to avoid actual debate. Can you provide evidence that I am an extremist or is that just something you say to discredit me so you don’t have to take my points seriously?
By the way, did you know that Bart Stupak was receiving daily death threats from you left wing extremists when he was a “no” vote for health care? How many news stories did you see about that? Now that he has switched sides and has received some death threats from the right, it is suddenly big news. Why would the media ignore it when liberals were making death threats but cover the heck out of it when it is conservatives making death threats? This poll asks the question “Do you want to see the health care bill repealed?” 55% want to see the bill repealed while 42% oppose repeal. Even though this poll is closer to 50/50 than the CBS poll, it is still 13 points away from being an even split.
You may have found one poll that shows a 50/50 split but every other reputable poll shows that the majority of Americans oppose this health care bill.

Judging from your last comment, I’m guessing you are a fan of FDR. This says a lot about you. Progressives have done a good job of rewriting history claiming FDR was a great President. However, I think the best way to tell how good of a President FDR was is to realize that Congress enacted Presidential term limits before FDR’s body was even cold. He was not a great President and we are still today dealing with some of his mistakes. He was the closest thing to a dictator this country has seen since King George. According to his Secretary of the Treasury, he even prolonged the Depression with his poor fiscal and domestic policies.
Did you hear about the companies that are predicting layoffs because of the taxes and mandates in Obamacare? This health care bill just keeps getting better and better every day doesn’t it? Hatred of FDR is one of the key attributes of right wing extremists–almost a litmus test. Even Ronald Reagan thought FDR was a great President. And you make one very large mistake—huge mistake. You are correct that FDR’s policies were not particularly effective for the economy, but that was not the point or essence of his Presidency.
The 20-30 million unemployed people in this country, the small business owners who were keeping their noses just barely above the rising water, the characters in “The Grapes of Wrath,” all of the down and out people, the people who followed the success of Sea Biscuit, they all wanted and needed one thing. THEY NEEDED TO BELIEVE THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WAS ONE OF THEM–THAT HE WAS EACH INDIVIDUAL MAN’S PERSONAL FRIEND—THAT HE REALLY CARED FOR THEM AS AN INDIVIDUAL PERSON. Roosevelt played that role, people believed him, and we got through.
Sure the economy would have gotten better eventually if just left alone. Everyone knows World War II got us out of the Great Depression economically. The question is whether we would have sunken into anarchy, become fascist or communist, or split apart as a country, or something far worse before that happened. FDR pulled us together like a really, really, really good basketball coach. He saved this nation just as surely as Washington or Lincoln. You may not believe that, but I trust the historians on this. And if you say the historians are all brainwashed liberals, then you prove yourself, irrevocably, as being a right wing extremist.

It looks like I must have touched a nerve because you actually responded to something I said. Unfortunately, you still lace your comments with insults (referring to me as a fence post) and you try to discredit me so you don’t have to actually think about my arguments. Both tactics are common among liberals… insult then discredit. This can be seen by the liberal media’s treatment of the tea parties. First they were called “tea baggers” which is actually a slang word for a sex act. This was the beginning of the insults. Then, they were accused of being racists even though no evidence or proof has been given to confirm this. This was the beginning of the discrediting.
This is the model liberals follow so they don’t have to defend their own views or respect those of other people. For example, if a tea partier says, “We need free market solutions to health care, not more government control!”, the liberal can respond by saying, “You stupid tea bagger, you’re just a racist so leave me alone and stop spewing your hate speech you right wing extremist!”
Do you see how it works? By following this model you never have to defend your own beliefs or respect those of another. This is what you are doing to me. I’m trying not to do it back to you, but I have allowed myself to use some sarcasm after you accused me of being a violent extremist who was calling congressmen and leaving death threats.

I agree that FDR had some (some is the key-word here) leadership qualities, but his policies caused severe damage to this country. For example, Social Security will be in the red starting this year. Where is the money going to come from to pay for this entitlement? It will send us into bankruptcy even quicker. Anyone under the age of fifty or fifty five will probably never see any of the money they have paid into Social Security. The money have been stolen and the people have been lied to about their Social Security investment. Thank you FDR.
As to your point about FDR making everyone believe he really cared about them, wouldn’t it have been better for FDR to actually enact policies that would create jobs and pull us out of the Depression instead of prolonging it? Are you really caring about people if you prolong their suffering for political ideology or electoral gain? To me, that is despicable. No wonder we enacted term limits before his body was even cold in the ground.
